Election Of Srdja Popovic As Lord Rector Of The University Of St Andrews

EDM number 515 in 2017-19, proposed by Stephen Gethins on 07/11/2017.
Categorised under the topic of Higher education.

That this House congratulates Srdja Popovic on his election by students of the University of St Andrews as that institution's 53rd Lord Rector; notes that Srdja Popovic is a founding member of the Centre for Applied Non-Violent Action and Strategies and founded the Serbian student protest movement Otpor! which participated in the protests in 2000 that lead to the overthrow of Slobodan Milosevic; further notes that the role of Rector, elected by students since 1858, is to preside at meetings of the University Court through their three year terms and, in more recent times, Rectors have provided students with informal pastoral support; and wishes Srdja Popovic well as he takes up his new post.
