The Need For An Incontinence Strategy

EDM number 486 in 2017-19, proposed by Christine Jardine on 01/11/2017.
Categorised under the topics of Diseases and Health education and preventive medicine.

That this House regrets that incontinence has a huge impact on a person's quality of life and only about 30 per cent of people with continence problems seek help; recognises women who are left with a rectus abdominis diastasis to be identified on the ward, if they have a hospital birth, and be referred to physiotherapy; acknowledges that only about 30 per cent of men and women with incontinence problems seek help; urges research into the current costs to the UK public purse caused by incontinence, including managing the secondary effects, loss of earnings, burden of disease and cost of treatment; and calls on the Government to expand the six week postnatal check to include a physiotherapy check for pelvic floor education, check for prolapse or muscle injury and assess for rectus diastasis.
