Coventry's 2021 City Of Culture Bid

That this House welcomes Coventry's shortlisting to be named UK City of Culture in 2021; recognises Coventry as a city of welcome and diversity, a city of innovation and invention, a city of peace and reconciliation, a city of extraordinary history, culture and heritage; further recognises the role of cultural assets like the Coventry Music Museum, Belgrade Theatre, Warwick Arts Centre, Coventry Cathedral, Herbert Art Gallery and Museum, Coventry Transport Museum, Godiva Festival and others in promoting the arts across the city; celebrates the diversity of Coventry's musical heritage as the city that pioneered electronic music, created 2-Tone, hosted the first legal all-night rave and brought Bhangra to the mainstream; notes Coventry's industrial contributions to cultural advancements as the birthplace of the modern bicycle, the jet engine and the motorcar, and its continuing role in automotive engineering; further welcomes the contribution to the city's cultural identity made by the University of Warwick and Coventry University, both of which add to the vibrancy and diversity of the city; further notes the cross-party support for Coventry's bid within the city and across the region; and calls on the Government to support Coventry's bid to be named UK City of Culture in 2021.
