Brazilian President
EDM number 1854 in 2017-19, proposed by Lloyd Russell-Moyle on 19/11/2018.
Categorised under the topic of International politics and government.
That this House is alarmed by the election of far-right candidate Jair Bolsonaro as Brazil's president; notes his support for the former dictatorship in Brazil and his remarks that it should have killed tens of thousands of more people; further notes his statements in favour of torture and extrajudicial police killings; expresses its deep concern over his recent remarks for a purge of political rivals in a cleansing the likes of which has never been seen in Brazilian history; rejects his threatening remarks against working class organisations, women, Brazil's large black population, homeless people, the LGBT community and non-governmental organisations; notes that the former President Lula was favourite to win the presidential election until he was jailed and barred from standing in a move condemned by the UN Human Rights Committee; notes that Judge Moro who carried out that investigation into Lula has, since the election, accepted appointment by Bolsonaro to be Brazil's Minister of Justice; calls for Lula's release; and expresses its support with Brazilians defending democracy, human rights and social progress.
