Strontian Community School Building Limited: Scotland's First Community-Owned School

EDM number 1818 in 2017-19, proposed by Ian Blackford on 12/11/2018.

That this House warmly congratulates Strontian Community School Building Limited for funding and constructing the first community-owned school in Scotland, in conjunction with Highland Small Communities Housing Trust; recognises the fantastic work done by local residents in raising £900,000 through community shares and grant applications after rejecting Highland Council's proposals for improving the previous Strontian Primary School building; endorses the fact that the resulting Community Finance Initiative supports the sustainability of this small rural community and is an exciting example of public and community partnership; notes that the innovative design of the building can be easily converted into four much-needed affordable homes should it no longer be required as a school; and wishes all pupils and staff a happy and successful tenure.
