Imprisonment Of The Former President Of The Parliament Of Catalonia

That this House expresses concern at the ongoing imprisonment of the former President of the Parliament of Catalonia, Carme Forcadell, who has been imprisoned since March 2018; notes that the crime of rebellion of which she has been accused refers to the use of violence, of which there has been no evidence; further notes that this inconsistency was highlighted by the German judiciary when it was tasked with assessing, and ultimately denying, the Spanish Government's request to have the former Catalan President, Carles Puigdemont, extradited and brought before a Spanish court; regrets attempts by the Spanish Government to interfere in the proceedings of the Catalan Parliament; supports the right of peoples to hold free and open discussions of ideas without state intrusion; calls on the resolution of these institutional and political conflicts through non-criminal channels; and further calls for the immediate release of former President of the Parliament of Catalonia, Carme Forcadell.
