Advance Care Planning

EDM number 1392 in 2017-19, proposed by Norman Lamb on 13/06/2018.
Categorised under the topics of Death, Diseases, Health services and Patient rights and complaints.

That this House welcomes the publication of Macmillan Cancer Support's new report Missed Opportunities, that examines the role Advance Care Planning (ACP) can play in ensuring that a dying person's wishes are met; understands that there are many barriers that can prevent health and social care professionals initiating conversations about an individual's end of life care wishes; notes that the pressure to stay positive and support people to fight cancer can, in some cases, become a barrier to open and honest conversations about dying; recognises that ACP conversations can play a crucial role in allowing people to have genuine choice about how they are cared for and where they spend their last days and hours; and encourages further action from Governments across the UK to ensure that professionals are better enabled to have those conversations and that the system is adequately resourced to meet patients' preferences.
