Imprisonment Of Tibetan Language Activist
EDM number 1308 in 2017-19, proposed by Chris Law on 23/05/2018.
Categorised under the topics of Asia, Human rights and Prisons.
That this House condemns the sentence of five years imprisonment from the Chinese Authorities for Tibetan language activist Tashi Wangchuk; notes that human rights groups, including Amnesty International and Human Rights Watch, have condemned the sentence; further notes that Tashi Wangchuk has peacefully and consistently advocated for rights for the Tibetan language in schools in the region; recognises that the main evidence used against Tashi Wangchuk was a video for the New York Times detailing his campaign; further recognises that that video proved Tashi Wangchuk operated through entirely peaceful and legitimate means; and calls on the Government to pressure the Chinese Government to release Tashi Wangchuk and other peaceful Tibetan activists.
