Reverand Jan And Linda Steyn UK Citizenship Refusal

EDM number 1102 in 2017-19, proposed by Stephen Gethins on 21/03/2018.
Categorised under the topics of Immigration and Religion and faith communities.

That this House is concerned about the decision by the Home Office to refuse UK citizenship to Reverend Jan Steyn and his wife Linda Steyn of Cupar, Fife; notes that after five years of dutiful service to Cupar St John’s and Dairsie United Parish Church of Scotland as minister for the congregation, Jan and his wife received permanent residence in November 2016; further notes that when applying a year later for citizenship, during which time he had accepted a temporary position as minister for the Scots Kirk, Church of Scotland, in Paris, his application was denied by the Home Office; recognises that he was maintaining a permanent home in Cupar while residing in Paris and always intended to return and re-establish close ties to the community once his time in France was over; further recognises the tremendous impact that Reverend Steyn has had on his church congregation and overall community; and urges the Government to overturn its decision and accept Jan and Linda Steyn's appeal for UK citizensnip.
