Clifford's Tower

EDM number 989 in 2016-17, proposed by Rachael Maskell on 28/02/2017.
Categorised under the topics of Cultural heritage and Religion and faith communities.

That this House notes the significance of Clifford's Tower in the history of York and the iconic fort that stands on a mount as part of the eye of York; welcomes the investment that English Heritage is making to upgrade this heritage monument through a comprehensive refurbishment of the internal part of the tower, in seeking to better tell the history of the tower including highlighting its tragic history as a place of the massacre and mass suicide of York's Jewish Community in 1190; is concerned that the current plans for the visitors centre block carved into the side of the motte are not in keeping with the area, detracting from its current stunning appearance, nor are supported by the local community; considers that there are other opportunities as part of the Castlegate development project to locate the visitors centre in an alternative location with the support of the city and to the benefit of attracting more people to the tower; and calls on the City of York Council and English Heritage to find an urgent resolution to the question of where the visitor centre should be sited; and to review the plans so that Clifford's Tower is fully accessible to all visitors.
