Article 50 And A Public Vote On The Terms Of The UK Leaving The EU

EDM number 875 in 2016-17, proposed by Geraint Davies on 23/01/2017.
Categorised under the topic of EU law and treaties.

That this House notes that in the EU referendum the UK did not vote for particular terms of withdrawal; further notes that triggering Article 50 hands back the UK's EU membership and gives the remaining 27 EU member states two years to decide the UK's exit package which best suits them and discourages others from leaving; notes that EU members would have an incentive to negotiate before Article 50 is triggered if it followed a UK vote on the exit package which, if rejected, would leave the UK in the EU; and therefore agrees to delay triggering Article 50 until after the UK negotiates the essential terms of its exit package and holds a popular vote on these terms.
