EDM number 430 in 2016-17, proposed by Patricia Gibson on 08/09/2016.
Categorised under the topics of Death and Mental health.
That this House recognises the importance of Suicide Prevention Week 2016, beginning on 5 September 2016, and of World Suicide Prevention Day on 10 September 2016, in raising awareness and understanding of an issue which deeply affects so many people; offers condolences to all those who have lost a friend or family member because of suicide; welcomes the exceptional work done by individuals, charities and awareness groups to offer support and coping strategies to those who may be contemplating suicide or struggling with their mental health; commends the Scottish Government on its Suicide Prevention Strategy, and its recognition that whilst suicides in Scotland are falling, any number of suicides is too high and continuous work is vital to tackling this issue; further recognises the importance of government funding in mental health care on suicide prevention and the necessity of making mental health an equal priority as physical health; and acknowledges that suicide is something which must be tackled by governments and peoples working together across the UK, Europe and the world, to prevent lives being lost to suicide.
