Transparency Of Pay At The BBC

EDM number 37 in 2016-17, proposed by Andrew Bridgen on 19/05/2016.
Categorised under the topic of Broadcasting.

That this House notes that the Secretary of State for Culture, Media and Sport, John Whittingdale, told Parliament that he wanted to see as much transparency as possible at the BBC and said that transparency is very important when public money is involved; has concerns that proposals outlined in the White Paper on the renewal of the BBC’s Charter, which will force the BBC to indicate the pay levels of its stars earning more than £450,000, will only apply to a handful of people; calls on the Department of Culture, Media and Sport to think again and reduce this threshold to £150,000, which is the same pay as the Prime Minister, to ensure the middle-rankings at the BBC are subject to the same kind of transparency and accountability to the taxpayer who already fund the BBC to the tune of £3.7 billion; and believes this is even more crucial given the BBC licence fee is set to rise in line with inflation which could cost taxpayers an extra £15 a year in the next five years.

This motion has been signed by a total of 9 MPs.
