Open Cast Coal Mine At Druridge Bay

EDM number 350 in 2016-17, proposed by Caroline Lucas on 19/07/2016.
Categorised under the topics of Climate change and Coal.

That this House notes the urgency of tackling climate change; further notes the Government's commitment to phasing out coal power stations by 2025, and its signing of the Paris Agreement; further notes that, in order to meet the goals of the Paris Agreement and stay below 1.5 degrees of global warming, the vast majority of the known reserves of fossil fuels must remain in the ground; is deeply concerned by the decision of Northumberland County Council to approve a new opencast coal mine at Druridge Bay, which undermines our national and international climate commitments, and will impact negatively on local wildlife, tourism and public health; expresses further concern that the voices of local residents, who submitted over 10,000 objections, were over-ruled; and requests that the Secretary of State for Communities and Local Government call in the decision to allow opencast coal mining at Druridge Bay, and ensure that national planning policy is revised in line with UK energy policy and decarbonisation commitments.

This motion has been signed by a total of 12 MPs.
