RNLI Volunteers And Key Worker Housing Schemes
EDM number 285 in 2016-17, proposed by Alistair Carmichael on 05/07/2016.
Categorised under the topics of Emergency services, Housing, Shipping and Voluntary organisations.
That this House recognises the essential service provided by the RNLI throughout the UK and the long and devoted service of many of its volunteers; further recognises the importance of RNLI stations to coastal and island communities; notes that many local authorities set aside social housing that is reserved exclusively for those who are deemed key workers including NHS staff, firefighters and those in the police force; further notes that the Government does not consider RNLI volunteers to fall into this category; is concerned of the effect that this will have on recruiting and retaining RNLI staff; and calls on the Government to reconsider this classification for the RNLI and provide all reasonable means to support local authorities in their housing provision for key emergency service workers.
