Post-Brexit Environmental Regulation

EDM number 1200 in 2016-17, proposed by Caroline Lucas on 26/04/2017.
Categorised under the topics of Agriculture and environment and EU law and treaties.

That this House notes with concern leaked Government documents suggesting that, during negotiations on the UK's future relationship with the EU, resources will be directed away from tackling important environment issues such as climate change and the illegal wildlife trade; further notes the letter of 16 April 2017 to the Prime Minister from leading environmental organisations calling on the Government to avoid a race to the bottom in environmental regulations over the coming years; notes that over 80 per cent of the British public and over 90 per cent of Conservative voters believe that environmental regulations should be maintained and strengthened upon withdrawal from the EU; notes with alarm reports that the 25-Year Plan for the Environment will not include clear targets or new funding for protecting and restoring the natural environment; and, in order to meet its manifesto commitment to be the first in a generation to restore the UK's natural environment, calls on the Government to introduce a new Environmental Protection Act to ensure that vital environmental protections are maintained and strengthened upon withdrawal from the EU.
