1916 Rising Centenary Committee
EDM number 818 in 2015-16, proposed by Carol Monaghan on 03/12/2015.
Categorised under the topic of Cultural heritage.
That this House welcomes the launch in the Irish Consulate in Edinburgh of the 1916 Rising Centenary Committee, Scotland; recognises that this committee will organise events to commemorate the centenary of the 1916 Easter Rising in Ireland, a watershed moment in that country's history that ultimately led to the establishment of an independent Irish state; further recognises that many Irish Scots, such as Coatbridge-born Margaret Skinnider, Edinburgh-born James Connolly and many others from around Scotland played a pivotal role in the Easter Rising and the subsequent War of Independence; notes that Irish Republicanism at this time was also heavily linked with both the labour movement in Ireland and the push for women's suffrage; acknowledges that this committee and its endeavours encompasses a wide array of Irish and Scottish community interests, relatives of participants in the Easter Rising, cultural, heritage and sports organisations, academics, representatives from the arts, the trades union movement, the Scottish and Irish Governments and politicians from different parties in Scotland; and looks forward to the events planned to commemorate the centenary.
