Ulster Victoria Cross Awards World War One

EDM number 691 in 2015-16, proposed by Ian Paisley Jnr on 10/11/2015.
Categorised under the topics of Armed forces and Military operations.

That this House proudly remembers the contributions and sacrifices made by soldiers from across the UK in World War One, and in particular the 10 men from Ulster awarded the Victoria Cross for their bravery, Robert Morrow from Dungannon who, despite heavy shelling, courageously carried six comrades to safety, Eric Bell from Enniskillen who bravely crept through heavy machine gun fire and shot the machine gunner, Edward Bingham from Bangor ordered two destroyers to move within close proximity to the enemy in order to gain a favourable firing position, William McFadzean from Lurgan who threw himself on top of a box of grenades which had fallen into a trench, Robert Quigg from Ardihannon who volunteered to look for his Lieutenant who had been lost in no man's land under heavy fire, and made seven sorties, each time bringing a wounded man back, John Sinton from Cookstown who was shot in both arms and in the side during a gunfire exchange in Mespotamia and refused to go to hospital, instead rescuing as many wounded men as possible before daylight expired, John Dunville, originally from London and then Belfast who put himself in front of an NCO who was dismantling enemy wire, Robert Hanna from Kilkeel who led a party through heavy fire to a strong point despite losing all officers in his party, James Crichton from Carrickfergus who led his platoon across a river despite being wounded and Edmund De Wind from Comber who almost singlehandedly held position despite being wounded and cleared out an enemy trench.
