Ibrahim Halawa And Visit Of Egyptian President To The UK

EDM number 648 in 2015-16, proposed by Alistair Carmichael on 04/11/2015.
Categorised under the topics of Africa, Human rights and International politics and government.

That this House notes with concern the case of Irish national Ibrahim Halawa who was arrested during pro-democracy protests in Cairo in August 2013; further notes that Ibrahim was just 17 years old at the time and visiting family in Egypt; notes that he was held in solitary confinement without medical attention and has been subjected to sustained torture; is dismayed that Ibrahim faces the death penalty as an adult in a mass trial of 494 people; urges the Prime Minister to use the visit of President el-Sisi to raise Ibrahim's case and other human rights abuses in Egypt; and calls on the Prime Minister to put further pressure on the Egyptian government to revoke all death sentences, release political prisoners and demonstrate its commitment to freedom of expression.

This motion has been signed by a total of 19 MPs.
