Glasgow Welcomes Refugees
EDM number 480 in 2015-16, proposed by Alison Thewliss on 17/09/2015.
Categorised under the topics of Asylum and Middle East.
That this House is pleased to note the vigil in George Square, Glasgow, which took place on 12 September 2015 to show solidarity with refugees fleeing Syria; considers that those attending the vigil also called for the Government to increase vastly the number of refugees it proposes to settle in the UK who have fled conflict and an increasingly desperate humanitarian crisis; echoes the view of those attending the Glasgow Sees Syria vigil that the UK can and must accommodate more refugees in a much quicker timescale than that proposed by the Prime Minister in his statement to the House on 7 September 2015; commends Glasgow City Council for draping a large banner over the frontage of Glasgow City Chambers which stated Glasgow Welcomes Refugees; congratulates the kind-hearted people of Glasgow who have worked so hard to fundraise and donate items of clothing to those fleeing Syria; and calls on the Government to do the right thing and consider increasing the number of refugees it plans to settle in Glasgow and further afield.
