Short Stature Scotland
EDM number 1335 in 2015-16, proposed by Brendan O'Hara on 11/04/2016.
Categorised under the topics of Charities and Disability discrimination.
That this House recognises the physical challenges that people with short stature, dwarfism, continue to face living in a world not suited to them and their needs and welcomes the good work being performed by Short Stature Scotland, the only charity registered in Scotland which strives to promote public awareness of, and give society an increased understanding of, the challenges that people living with short stature face on a daily basis; notes that people of short stature endeavour to lead a life which mirrors that of others in society, which may include pursuing a desired occupation, entering into a relationship and having a family, or as witnessed recently, by being a medal-winning Paralympic athlete; praises the work Short Stature Scotland whose outreach work includes going into schools to educate young children about their condition and seeks to challenge from an early age, what many people regard as the last socially acceptable prejudice; and commends Short Stature Scotland's aim to make people aware of the prejudice that still exists both in the common usage of lazy and outdated language and modes of behaviour that are insulting, insensitive and inappropriate.
