School Janitors Industrial Action In Glasgow
EDM number 1326 in 2015-16, proposed by Chris Stephens on 24/03/2016.
Categorised under the topics of Employment, Industrial relations and Schools.
That this House notes the current industrial action undertaken by primary school and nursery janitors employed by Cordia, an Arms Length external organisation (ALEO) owned by Glasgow City Council, over working context and demands payments which allow additional pay for arduous work, or working in difficult and dangerous conditions; further notes that the action undertaken so far includes a six week boycott of additional duties and a three day strike; notes that if these janitors were direct employees of the Council they would receive an additional payment of between £500 to £1,000 a year; agrees that at a time when Parliament is debating premium payments and low wages such discrepancies in pay require to be highlighted by parliamentarians; notes the key role of the trade union movement in highlighting pay discrepancies; is concerned that such differences in pay for staff employed in the Glasgow City Council job family is discriminatory; and encourages Cordia to settle this industrial dispute.
