Musselburgh's Riding Of The Marches 2016
EDM number 1266 in 2015-16, proposed by George Kerevan on 16/03/2016.
Categorised under the topics of Cultural heritage and Leisure.
That this House congratulates the people, community organisations, churches and local businesses of Musselburgh who have contributed to organising the ceremony of Riding the Marches in 2016; notes that the Riding of the Marches has been held and recorded continuously in Musselburgh every 21 years for all of three and a half centuries, that it dates from centuries even earlier, and that it is one of the most ancient continuous civic events to be held in the British Isles; understands the Riding has its roots in the need to mark and renew municipal boundaries, the better to protect common lands; recognises that today local participation in the Riding serves to promote civic values, solidarity, community leadership, inclusiveness and public spirit, as well as providing a great spectacle; and wishes the 2016 Musselburgh Riding of the Marches every success.
