National Living Wage
EDM number 1214 in 2015-16, proposed by Siobhain McDonagh on 08/03/2016.
Categorised under the topics of Incomes and poverty, Industrial relations and Pay.
That this House notes that some employers are cutting staff allowances, reducing overtime and bank holiday pay, and overall compensation packages to offset the cost of the national living wage; is concerned that as a result of the changes, many low-paid employees will be left worse off even after minimum basic pay is increased; further notes with concern that the changes at B&Q will see up to 10 per cent of the lowest-paid staff losing up to £50 a week, or £2500 a year; calls for all employers to make a commitment to ensure that no employee is made worse off or is made redundant as a result of the introduction of the national living wage; and further calls on the Chancellor of the Exchequer to recognise these actions and push employers to protect the wages of their staff.
