Parliament Of Denmark And Refugees
EDM number 1027 in 2015-16, proposed by Angus MacNeil on 28/01/2016.
Categorised under the topic of Asylum.
That this House and friends of Denmark are disappointed in the moves by the Danish Parliament, the Folketing, in passing a Migrant Bill, which as well as delaying family reunions, will take much of the last remaining property from people seeking asylum in Denmark who may have lost everything in war or persecution, fleeing with only the possessions they can carry, to be then stripped of those few moveable possessions if they seek sanctuary in Denmark; appeals for no other governments in the EU to follow this very narrow, mean-minded example; hopes that people traffickers do not emulate this state behaviour either; notes that this move has been criticised by the Geneva-based UNHCR; and considers that instead, people should show understanding of why such situations arise and generosity of spirit and provide help to those in such a situation lest people today or their descendants ever find themselves in a similar situation.
This motion has been signed by a total of 29 MPs.
