Obesity, Diet And Labelling
EDM number 1 in 2015-16, proposed by David Tredinnick on 27/05/2015.
Categorised under the topic of Obesity.
That this House welcomes the recommendations in the Health Select Committee Report, Impact of Physical Activity on Diet and Health; believes that the Government needs to prioritise prevention, health promotion and early intervention to tackle the growing obesity crisis, and provide the necessary resources; acknowledges that progress has been made by introducing traffic light nutrition labelling; further recommends that Public Health England should introduce clear targets for reductions, with the Government considering regulatory measures to enforce this if voluntary approaches do not work, starting with the reduction in the sugar consumed by children in sugar sweetened drinks and steps to prevent the marketing of unhealthy food and sugary drinks to children; looks forward to the publication of Public Health England's review of the evidence base for introducing a sugar tax, which is expected later this year; and calls on the Government to act swiftly to address the growing obesity crisis which costs the NHS £6 billion a year on medical costs of conditions related to obesity and a further £10 billion on diabetes.
