Emily Davison Tribute

EDM number 99 in 2013-14, proposed by George Galloway on 15/05/2013.
Categorised under the topics of Electoral franchise, Equality and Sports.

That this House notes that Emily Davison died on 8 June 1913, after being struck by the King's horse in the Epsom Derby as she attempted to raise again the issue of votes for women; further notes that this is therefore the centenary year of Emily Davison's death; further notes that Emily Davison was a redoubtable suffragette who hid in a cupboard in the House of Commons Crypt so she would be registered in the 1911 census as resident in the House of Commons, an act now commemorated in the Crypt by a plaque laid by Tony Benn; further notes that a campaign has been launched to demand that a minute's silence be observed at this year's Epsom Derby to commemorate Emily Davison's death in the fight to win equal voting rights for women; wholeheartedly supports this campaign; and calls on the relevant authorities to enable a minute's silence to be observed at the Derby in order to commemorate Emily Davison's death and more generally the amazing and ultimately successful struggle by so many women to achieve universal suffrage.

This motion has been signed by a total of 14 MPs.
