Free Speech Attack In Greece
EDM number 260 in 2013-14, proposed by George Galloway on 17/06/2013.
Categorised under the topics of Europe and Media.
That this House considers the sudden decision to close the Greek state television and radio station a blatant attack on free speech; notes that some 3,000 journalists and technicians have been dismissed; believes that private interests have used the financial crisis as a pretext to destroy the main source of non-partisan information and cultural programming; contrasts the muted political and media reaction to this with the hysteria when the Venezuelan government did not renew a private channel's licence; and calls on the Government to protest to the Greek government in the strongest possible terms about this shameful act of cultural vandalism.
