Battle Of Waterloo

EDM number 185 in 2013-14, proposed by Barry Sheerman on 04/06/2013.
Categorised under the topics of Cultural heritage, Military operations, Veterans and Western Europe.

That this House is conscious of the approaching bicentennial of the Battle of Waterloo in June 2015 and is supportive of the charity Project Hougoumont which is raising funds to help in the restoration of the Chateau d'Hougoumont which was the eye of the battle and which has fallen into serious disrepair; is further aware that the British army stands alone as the only participating force that has no monument to its troops that played such a decisive part in the battle and is delighted that Project Hougoumont has gained permission and has raised the necessary funds to erect such a monument in Hougoumont once it is restored in 2015; and calls for a vigorous public fundraising campaign to support the restoration of the Chateau so that this fine building will be maintained for future generations and will house the monument to reflect the bravery and decency of the British soldiers who fought in this famous victory which set the foundations of modern Europe.
