Tony Ward Trust And The Resilience Project
EDM number 173 in 2013-14, proposed by Timothy Farron on 04/06/2013.
Categorised under the topics of Children and families, Sports and Voluntary organisations.
That this House commends the foundation of the Tony Ward Trust as a lasting legacy of his lifetime's service to the sport of athletics in the UK; recognises the unique commitment of the Trust's founder Gwenda Ward to both identifying and overcoming rural barriers to young people's participation in sport throughout Cumbria; notes that these barriers include travel issues, over-reliance on amateur coaches and a lack of access to top class facilities or organised competition; further commends the Trust's innovative resilience project aimed at equipping youngsters with the mental attributes needed for both sporting and professional success in later life; regards the work of the Trust as exemplary of the spirit of the London 2012 Olympic Games and an unmissable opportunity to provide a lasting, meaningful legacy for the Games in Cumbria; and calls on the Government and all those within UK athletics to lend their support to the Trust as it seeks to gain the publicity and funds needed for success.
