That this House notes 30 January 2013 marks what would have been the 100th birthday of Percy Thrower MBE; recognises his contribution to national life through horticulture, gardening, broadcasting and journalism made throughout his career which started in the Royal Gardens at Windsor Castle through to his post at Shrewsbury as the youngest parks superintendent in the country where he started on 1 January 1946 and retired in 1974; further recognises his emergence on television in 1954 and on Gardeners World in colour in 1968 as the first of their kind; further notes his work throughout the parks in Shrewsbury leading them to win numerous awards; recalls his comments as horticultural adviser to Shrewsbury flower show which he described as, second only to Chelsea; further notes his business started in Shrewsbury in 1969, Percy Thrower's Garden Centre; further recognises his contribution to public life through the part he played in the Dig for Victory campaign and as a special constable in the Second World War; and congratulates the Shropshire Horticultural Society for continuing his legacy through the Percy Thrower Trust and its bursaries given to young horticulturists.
