Protecting The Lake District From Plans For A Geological Disposal Facility In Cumbria

EDM number 982 in 2012-13, proposed by Timothy Farron on 29/01/2013.
Categorised under the topics of Nature conservation, Nuclear power, Tourism and Waste management.

That this House notes the current discussions on whether to proceed to stage 4 of the managing radioactive waste safely process to investigate the feasibility and safety implications of plans for a geological disposal facility (GDF) in Cumbria; raises concerns that any decision to build a GDF under any part of the Lake District National Park in Cumbria could have a huge impact on the national park's international image and brand as a world class tourism destination, which is vital to the Cumbria economy; and calls on the three local authorities involved to take the Lake District National Park out of any plans for a geological disposal facility.
