Bradford City FC (No. 3)

EDM number 963 in 2012-13, proposed by George Galloway on 23/01/2013.
Categorised under the topic of Sports.

That this House notes that the upper echelons of football are now dominated by clubs spending tens and even hundreds of millions of pounds on transfers and in huge wages; further notes that the Bradford City FC team (the Bantams so-called for their fighting spirit) cost just 7,500 in transfer fees; further notes that the Bantams beat Premier League Aston Villa 4-3 on aggregate to become only the second fourth-tier team to reach a cup final involving all of the Football League teams and the first to reach aWembley cup final; further notes the second leg was a game of two halves with Villa almost completely dominant in the first half but the Bantams showing their fighting spirit coming back to score in the second half; further notes that what proved to be the winning goal came from a wonderful header by Big Jim Hanson; further notes that James Hanson was stacking shelves in the Co-op just two years ago; further notes that this fantastic achievement by the Bantams comes after two periods of administration and the appalling fire at the stadium on 11 May 1985 which killed 56 and injured at least 265; believes that the Bantams' achievement shows everything that is best in football in general and in cup football in particular; and wishes the Bantams every success in the Capital One (League Cup) Final at Wembley on 24 February 2013.
