Bloody Sunday

EDM number 902 in 2012-13, proposed by Gregory Campbell on 09/01/2013.
Categorised under the topics of Armed forces and Terrorism.

That this House notes the recent decision by the police in Northern Ireland to begin questioning former soldiers as part of an investigation into the events known as Bloody Sunday in Londonderry on 30 January 1972; reiterates the view that was expressed at the time of the Saville Report by many in the Unionist community that rather than the Report being viewed as being a conclusion of the matter, it would be used as a platform to continue pursuit of soldiers who were deployed in Londonderry's Bogside on the day, following a murder campaign conducted by the Provisional IRA; andcalls on the Chief Constable in Northern Ireland to ensure that the investigation does not make the mistake the Saville Report made, which was to ignore the underlying violence which brought the soldiers into Londonderry on that fateful day and to fail to investigate thoroughly the role played by senior Provisional IRA personnel including Martin McGuinness in the weeks and months before 30 January 1972.
