Councillor Sir Albert Bore

EDM number 887 in 2012-13, proposed by John Hemming on 07/01/2013.
Categorised under the topic of Local government.

That this House notes that Councillor Albert Bore, the Labour Leader of Birmingham City Council, has made reference to the Jaws of Doom when raising concern about the challenges in balancing the local authority's revenue account; further notes that the biggest challenge arises from his failure when previously in office properly to implement equal pay, and that when he lost control of the Council a white line painter was being paid over 50,000 per year and unfair bonuses were being paid; furthernotes that this has cost Birmingham's taxpayers potentially 750 million; further notes that this authority has done relatively well in the local government settlement in comparison to other authorities; further notes that one of the first actions of the Labour administration on taking office was to increase the salaries of certain staff including some increases of over 70 per cent; further notes that the Labour administration appears intent on punishing the poor by charging 20 per cent council tax to people on jobseeker's allowance; believes thatthe administration hasfailed to understand the statutory limit on court orders for attachment of benefit of 3.55 which means that itwill not get paid allit asks for; further notes that Sir Albert has failed to indicate what he believes would be a reasonable settlement and is planning to make redundancies in order to increase wages of other people; and furtherbelieves that rather than wailing in the Temple of Doom he should take a course in accounting in order to learn how properly to manage Birmingham City Council's finances, protect the vulnerable and maintain employment.
