That this House welcomes the recommendation by the National Institute for Health and Clinical Excellence for the introduction of further bicycle-hire schemes and recommending cycling and walking for short journeys of less than 20 minutes; notes that an NHS survey published in 2012 found that just over a quarter of all adults in England are obese and around one in seven children; further notes that obesity is a leading factor in the development of type 2 diabetes and that even a modest reduction in weight brings important health benefits, reducing the risk of the condition; and calls on the Departmentfor Transport to evaluate the possibility of further bicycle-hire schemes to encourage more individuals to cycle.
