EDM number 688 in 2012-13, proposed by Valerie Vaz on 06/11/2012.
Categorised under the topic of Media.
That this House is concerned by representations of women in the media that construct unrealistic notions of female beauty; notes the negative impact of such portrayals on the body image of young women; further notes findings by the All Party Parliamentary Group on Body Image that 70 per cent of women and 40 per cent of men in the UK feel pressure from the media to have the perfect body; is further concerned by the role of the media in facilitating the sexualisation of young girls; supports the online petition organised by No More Page 3, calling for the removal of topless women from newspapers; further notes the effect of such images on young girls and the construction of gender stereotypes; and calls for the Government to encourage more responsible portrayals of women in the media that focus on positive aspirations and reduce scrutiny of appearance and body weight.
