Illegal Bird Trapping In Cyprus

EDM number 682 in 2012-13, proposed by Alan Meale on 05/11/2012.
Categorised under the topics of Animal welfare, Crime and Western Europe.

That this House is alarmed about the chronic and fast-growing practice of illegal wild bird trapping, in particular in the Republic of Cyprus, with massive profits being made by organised ruthless trappers, who sellhundreds ofthousands of mostly migrant birds, killed to supply expensive ambelopoulia so-called delicacies to law-breaking restaurants on the island; notes that such activities, currently estimated to be worth in the order of 15 million per year, have been classified as illegal in Cyprus since 1974, as is the possession of trapping equipment, together with the serving and eating of ambelopoulia; is therefore especially concerned about the high levels of such practices taking place within the British Sovereign Base Areas (SBAs), with independent reports recording huge numbers of mist nettings and a dramatic increase in limestick use, as well as significant areas of created and extensively irrigated acacia patches managed as trapping sites; and calls on the Government immediately to order the SBA police and military authorities without exception to fully enforce and uphold the law to bring an end to such disgraceful and illegal activities.
