Killing Of Female Afghan Politician Hanifa Safi

EDM number 402 in 2012-13, proposed by Joan Ruddock on 16/07/2012.
Categorised under the topics of Afghanistan and International politics and government.

That this House condemns the killing of Afghan politician Hanifa Safi; notes that the bomb attached to her car not only killed her but also seriously injured her husband and daughter; further notes that Ms Safi was the Laghman Provincial Head of the Afghan Ministry of Women's Affairs; recalls that in 2006 Safia Ama Jan, who headed the Kandahar Department of Women's Affairs, was shot dead by the Taliban; praises the courage of these two women and the thousands like them who run risks every day simply for upholding women's rights as enshrined in the Afghan Constitution; and calls on the Government to ensure that Afghan women's rights are not traded away in any negotiated settlement and that any future UK aid and development funds are conditional on women's rights being upheld.

This motion has been signed by a total of 66 MPs.
