Use Of Stray Cats And Dogs In Laboratory Experiments
EDM number 216A1 in 2012-13, proposed by Julian Huppert on 28/06/2012.
leave out from `House' to end and add `notes the transposition of Directive 2010/63/EU on the protection of animals used for scientific purposes; observes that the RSPCA report that they have looked very carefully into the use of stray animals for research, and `believe there will not, in fact, be any change to the current situation in the UK - and that the intention of the Home Office remains NOT to allow the use of any stray animals'; endorses this position and encourages the Home Office not to use stray animals for research; understands that animals are used in research for a number of reasons, including trials for potential treatments and medicines for animals as well as humans, research for veterinary purposes into animal diseases, research into ecosystem behaviours and fundamental biological research, which furthers our understanding of how disease mechanisms and biological systems operate; further notes that the use of animals for cosmetic testing is and should remain illegal in the UK; and calls on the Government to support continued efforts to reduce the numbers of animals used in experiments, replace animals used in experiments where possible and to refine experiments to minimise the suffering caused.'.
