National Blood Week And World Blood Donor Day

That this House welcomes the secondannual National Blood Week held from 11 to 17 June 2012; further welcomes World Blood Donor Day which took place on 14 June 2012 and marks the birth of Nobel Prize winner Karl Landsteiner whofirst discovered the main blood grouping system in 1900; notes that the day hopes to encourage further volunteers across the globe to donate bloodand lead the way to improving the safety and adequacy of national blood supplies; further notes with concern that national blood stocksfell by 7 per cent over the Jubilee weekend; recognises that countries worldwide will celebrate WorldBlood DonorDay with events to raise awareness of the need for safe blood and blood products; applauds voluntary unpaid blood donorsfor their live-saving gifts; and encourages others throughout the UK to consider voluntarily giving blood and join the silent and unsung heroes who save lives everyday through their blooddonations.
