Euro 2012
EDM number 168 in 2012-13, proposed by Valerie Vaz on 12/06/2012.
Categorised under the topics of Racial discrimination and Sports.
That this House is deeply concerned about the possibility of racist violence at Euro 2012 and the safety of football fans, particularly black and Asian supporters, going to enjoy the tournament; is appalled by the scenes of racist, anti-Semitic and fascist language and extreme violence on the terraces in Poland and the Ukraine and apparent disregard paid by some in the police forces as exposed by the BBC's Panorama programme screened on 29 May 2012; recognises the good work done by organisations within the host countries to address the issue, such as the Never Again Association in Poland; commends the positive example set by some England fans who will meet Ukrainian football fan groups at the tournament to work towards a fan-friendly football culture and Hope not Hate which has gathered evidence in Poland, as well as the ongoing work of the trade union movement and the PCS Black Members' Network on this issue and organisations such as Show Racism the Red Card, Kick It Out and Unite Against Fascism that tackle racism in UK football; trusts that the Union of European Football Associations' (UEFA)policy of zero tolerance to racism is more than a slogan; and urges the Government to contact UEFA and the host countries' police forces to ensure that the necessary measures are taken to protect fans from the UK and around Europe during the tournament and that full Consular support is given to those in need of assistance as a result of any racist attacks.
