English National Anthem

EDM number 1297 in 2012-13, proposed by Greg Mulholland on 22/04/2013.
Categorised under the topics of Cultural heritage and Sports.

That this House welcomes the calls and campaign for an English anthem; believes that England should have its own anthem, just as Scotland and Wales do when they compete as individual nations; further believes it is wrong when England teams use the UK national anthem when competing as England rather than as Great Britain or the UK and that this confuses England with Britain and the UK; further believes that the British national anthem should be used when teams compete as the UK and Great Britain such as in the Olympics and Paralympics and for British teams like the British Lions in both codes of rugby; adds that St George's Day is the ideal day for people to speak up for English identity and an English anthem; calls on the English public to get behind the campaign calling on all English sporting associations to adopt a rousing English anthem that England teams, athletes and English sports fans could unite behind whenever an England team or an English athlete takes to the sporting arena; and notes that this year's Rugby League World Cup 2013 should be the first major World Cup where an England team uses an English anthem.
