St Hilda's College, Oxford, And The Harlem Shake
EDM number 1231 in 2012-13, proposed by George Galloway on 20/03/2013.
Categorised under the topics of Broadcasting, Libraries, Performing arts and Students.
That this House notes that a group of students at St Hilda's College, Oxford, performed the Harlem Shake in fancy dress in the College library for a jape on 17 February 2013 and that this has become an online sensation; further notes that the College authorities seem to have suffered a severe sense of humour loss and as a result penalised at least some of the students involved; further notes that, worse, the College librarian has been sacked as a result of this incident for which the librarian bears no responsibility; further notes that the College Junior Common Room has voted for the librarian to be reinstated; further notes that St Hilda's College was named after Hilda of Whitby who was noted for her wisdom and good advice; believes that the College authorities should draw on St Hilda's wisdom in relation to this incident; and urges the College authorities to think again, see the funny side of this, reinstate the librarian and withdraw the disciplinary proceedings against its enterprising students.
