EDM number 985 in 2010-12, proposed by Elfyn Llwyd on 10/11/2010.
Categorised under the topic of Prisons.
That this House notes the riots which occurred on 2, 3 and 4 November 2010 at HM Prison and Young Offender InstitutionMoorland and the disturbance at HM Prisonand Young Offender Institution Warren Hill on2 November 2010; recognises the acts of bravery and professionalism that public sector prison officers displayed on those evenings to protect life, property and the general public; believes that had it not been for the actions of prison officers demonstrating high levels of skill then the outcome could have been far worse; is extremely concerned regarding the acts of violence towards members of the Prison Officers Association and also to the acts of violence by prisoners on each other which prison officers managed to keep to an absolute minimum; further believes that violence against officers and those in their care is totally unacceptable and wishes any injured staff and prisoners a full and speedy recovery; further notes these assaults and the considerable damage to both prisons; is gravely concerned that the cuts to the Criminal Justice System announced in the Comprehensive Spending Review are unsustainable as they will undoubtedly affect the levels of frontline prison officers making thepublic sector prison service unsafe and dangerous for prison officers and those in their care; and therefore callson the Government to think again.
