Information Commissioner And Internet Privacy

EDM number 882 in 2010-12, proposed by Robert Halfon on 25/10/2010.
Categorised under the topics of Internet and cybercrime and Standards.

That this House welcomes the statement by the Information Commissioner's office that it will open an inquiry into Google's data-harvesting, after revelations in the media that the company's Street View cars captured complete emails and passwords from unsuspecting members of the public; notes however that the Information Commissioner had previously failed to take substantial action, despite the example set by most countries in Europe, Canada, South Korea and others; therefore welcomes the Backbench Business Committee debate into these matters on 28 October 2010; and calls on the Information Commissioner to take a robust approach as it protects individual freedom against the threat of a privatised surveillance society.

This motion has been signed by a total of 6 MPs.
