Women's Institute Federation Campaign On UK Food Labelling
EDM number 830 in 2010-12, proposed by Alan Meale on 14/10/2010.
Categorised under the topic of Food.
That this House commends the work done by members of the Women's Institute Federation in highlighting the need for the introduction of measures to introduce clear country of origin labelling in the UK for all fresh meat and meat and fish processed products; believes that such identification is important to enable consumers to identify easilyindividual food stuff's origins, together with any key ingredients within them; is aware that at present in Britain origin labelling laws are woefully inadequate, as it is only required if a failure to do so would mislead customers, and thatthe present legal definition of any food's origins can be at the very least disingenuous as many unfinished products can and are sourced into the UK food industries then later carry a Made in Britain logo; and calls on the Government to recognise the seriousness of such shortcomings which can cloud and hide shoppers' legitimate concerns about animal welfare, food miles, sustainability and many other issues and to introduce measures to ensure shoppers can make an informed choice about products on offer.
