Service Of The Late Miss Eileen Nearne Mbe
EDM number 724 in 2010-12, proposed by Adrian Sanders on 14/09/2010.
Categorised under the topic of Military operations.
That this House records its appreciation and thanks for the life and contribution of Miss Eileen Nearne who was one of 39 female Special Operations Executive (SOE) agents sent overseas during the Second World War to risk their lives on operations in occupied France; notes that Miss Nearne assumed numerous identities to carry out actions including alongside the French Resistance and despite being captured twice, first by the Gestapo and later by the SS, persuaded both that she was an innocent French woman; and further notes that the service she and other SOE agents carried out contributed to the Allied Victory and that Miss Nearne remained tight-lipped about her own contribution, with her remarkable service only coming to light after her death on 2 September 2010, in Torquay, Devon, aged 89.
