Workplace Learning

EDM number 494 in 2010-12, proposed by Timothy Farron on 14/07/2010.
Categorised under the topics of Employment and Training.

That this House welcomes the work of learning advocates, operated by the Johnston Partnership in Cumbria, that has so far supported 1,200 non-unionised workers into learning and provided information and advice to 1,700 others; recognises that there is a gap in learning promotion in the non-unionised sector and therefore a large number of employees have very little access to learning opportunities; acknowledges that many employers do not have the capacity to operate a training department and therefore benefit from having a learning advocate or learning supporter operating in the workplace; believes that the learning advocates model of training, where a member of staff/volunteer takes part in an online one-day or four-day training course so that they can inform colleagues of free training opportunities, is cost-effective and cost-beneficial; and calls on the Government to consider backing this scheme, allowing it to be implemented nationwide.
