North Review And The Drink Drive Limit
EDM number 266 in 2010-12, proposed by John Leech on 17/06/2010.
Categorised under the topic of Roads.
That this House recognises the number of people killed and seriously injured as a result of collisions involving drivers over the legal Blood Alcohol Content (BAC) limit; notes the publication of Sir Peter North's Review of Drink and Drug Driving; further notes that with a BAC limit of between 50mg/100ml and the current 80mg/100ml limit a driver has a six times greater risk of road death than a non-drinking driver; further notes Sir Peter's estimation that a reduction of the BAC limit from 80mg/100ml to 50mg/100ml could save around 168 lives per year; and calls on the Government to implement Sir Peter's recommendations to reduce the BAC limit to 50mg/100ml and to maintain the current 12-month mandatory driving ban for drivers found to be at the lower limit.
